Mrs. Asbury J. Barber entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Maple Grove Health and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro, NC.
She was born on October 18, 1918 to the late Rev. Rufus Jamerson, Sr. and the late Clara Douthit Jamerson.
For 34 years she was a first grade teacher at Pleasant Ridge School in the Gaston County School System before and after integration. She was an active member of St. Stephen A.M.E. Zion Church in Gastonia where she served as a senior choir member, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and Communion Stewardess. She was a Golden Soror with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a member of The LINKS.
Mrs. Barber received her degrees from Teacher's College (TC), now Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina Central University.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Rev. Rufus Jamerson, Jr. and husband, George Clement Barber.
She leaves to celebrate her life a dear friend for over 62 years, Mrs. Ann P. Robinson; devoted cousins and caregivers, Rev. Dr. Arnetta Beverly and Robert D. Craven; caregiver, Mrs, Danita Gordon, her Stephen A.M.E. Zion Church family, her niece, Mrs. Patsy J. Clark and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be Thursday in the Craven-Powell Chapel at Roberts Funeral Service at 7:00pm with family visitation at 6:30pm. A graveside service will be Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Gastonia, NC at 1:00pm.
