Bertha Clark Duncan was born January 24, 1950, to the late Clarence Clark, Sr., and Geneva Wall Clark. She transitioned to be with Our Lord in Glory on Monday, August 18, 2025.
Bertha was educated in the Davie County Public School system. Bertha was a member of the first class to graduate from the consolidated Davie High School. She valued the importance of education, as demonstrated by her numerous achievements. She received her B.S. in Business Administration from Winston-Salem State University. Winston-Salem State University was the beginning of her lifelong commitment to serving others, starting with Veterans Affairs, where she worked for thirty-two years and received numerous awards and commendations.
Bertha believed it was important that her family knew their history and stayed connected. With the help of several family members, she was able to keep her family educated about their heritage. She was instrumental in organizing and sponsoring the annual family reunion, which they were able to host in various areas all over North Carolina.
Love for her community and church was essential, and one of her greatest desires. Bertha was a former member of Boxwood Missionary Baptist Church and Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church before moving her membership to Zion Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she dedicated her gifts and love for Christ. Her passion for Christ and children guided her through many church roles. She was a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, member of the Sympathy ministry, and the Tutorial program. Bertha was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and the Order of Eastern Star, affiliated with the James H. Young Memorial Chapter #592.
Bertha's faith and love of family helped her in continuing her journey of volunteering and serving others through such programs as the American Legion, Piedmont Environment Alliance, and the Forsyth County Missionary. Whenever she had the chance, Bertha delighted in a wide range of activities-from walking, bowling, and golfing to watching movies, football, NASCAR, comedies, and extreme sports. She also had a deep appreciation for the environment, a love for gospel music, and a fondness for dining at K & W.
Bertha married the love of her life, the late Reynold Erastus Duncan. To this union, a daughter was born, Monica Renee Duncan.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Herbert Clark Sr., Joe Clark, Elbert Clark, and Frank Clark; a sister, Rether Parker; sisters-in-law, Sadie Clark, Ozener Clark, Lurline Clark, Peggie Marie Hicks; and a brother-in-law, Lyman Parker.
Bertha leaves to cherish her loving memory, her daughter, Monica Renee Duncan of Advance, North Carolina; three brothers: Charlie (Cora) Clark of New York; Preston (Betty) Clark of Salisbury, North Carolina and Clarence Clark, Jr. of Advance, North Carolina; great-aunt, Marie Matthews; a brother-in-law, Horace (Mildred) Duncan Jr, of Maysville, North Carolina; sister-in-law: Paulette Clark; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers and friends.
Her life will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Zion Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina with a 30 minute visitation prior to service time. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury, North Carolina.
