Ms. Cora "Juanita" Herron
A Journey Begins...
Many defining moments tell the story of Juanita Herron who was born in Charlotte, NC on July 3, 1934. Her life was shaped by good Christian grandparents, the late Andy James and Anna B. Herron. Her independent mentality and self-sufficiency can be attributed to her mother, the late Cora "Alma" Herron, who gave her the nickname of "Tootsie", and close relatives and friends often referred to her as "Toot".
Juanita received her high school diploma from Plato Price High School in Charlotte, NC and her Bachelor of Arts and Science degree in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem Teachers College which is now formally known as Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). Juanita has a true passion for children, education and empowering and inspiring others. After she graduated from college, Juanita spent approximately three years at the beginning of her teaching career in El Centro, CA where she taught elementary education in the El Centro California School District. After returning to her home state of North Carolina, she became a first and second grade teacher within the Kings Mountain School District from 1961 until she officially retired from the school system in 1994 to care for her mother full time. In her spare time, Juanita loved doing things that kept her moving and involved in the community. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and she was also a leader of a Girl's Scout Troop in Charlotte, NC. Following the footsteps of her upbringing, she was a dedicated member of First United Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC where Juanita quickly jumped into servantship by calling those on the sick and shut-in list every Friday and serving as the president of one of the church's women's auxiliaries, Deborah Circle.
For the last ten years of her life, Juanita lived in the comforting and loving care of Taji and Jasmine Jacobs until she peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, January 31, 2025.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories and the legacy of her love to Taji (Jasmine) Jacobs, Sr., affectionately known as "Tootsie's baby"; her sweethearts, Khaliah Jacobs and Taji Jacobs, Jr.; her sidekick and furry best friend, Phoebe; her cousins who she cared for like siblings: Patricia T. "Patty Wat" Jacobs, Lorraine "Lo" Little, Debra (Arthur) DeLapp, Timothy (Fusaka) Thomas, Craven Thomas; and a host of cousins, other family and friends who found strength for the day, courage for the night and hope for tomorrow, knowing that "God's strength is made perfect in our weakness".
