Obituary

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 King James Version

Clara Elizabeth Foote Dalton was born on August 12, 1927 and entered the church triumphant on July 30, 2022. Elizabeth, as most called her, was raised in Guilford County, NC with her seven siblings, by George H. and Arrie Elizabeth Patterson Foote. At an early age, she gave her life to the Lord and became a member of Chinquapin Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Mocksville, NC. Growing up, she enjoyed playing basketball—much like her son Newman Jr., at Davie County Training School, where she graduated.

Elizabeth met and married the love of her life, Newman Lee Preston Dalton, Sr., of Iredell County, North Carolina, whom she regularly spoke of as her earthly jewel. They resided briefly in New York, then returned to North Carolina and settled in Mocksville. Throughout their 38 year union, they built a home, raised their two children, were a second home to their four grandchildren, and created lasting legacies for their great grandchildren to experience on what is now Dalton Road.

As an adult, Elizabeth was a faithful member and deaconess of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was on the Pastor's Aide Committee and Culinary Committee. Everyone could count on her serving in style, as she had an elaborate collection of church hats to match her Sunday's best.

Elizabeth's family remembers her as being a woman of great faith and many gifts. She showed her love in action and through her handiwork. Her famous, made from scratch, 7-up pound cakes, chocolate cakes, and other baked goods were a special treat mailed to her loved ones on their birthdays. She was also an excellent seamstress, and sewed beautiful outfits for her grandchildren for Christmas, back to school, and other occasions. Additionally, she acted as the nurse for family medical emergencies. In short, she always knew how to make a situation better.

Elizabeth's touch extended beyond church and family. Hanes Knitting Company is where Elizabeth diligently worked for 27 years before retiring as a supervisor. Prior to that, she worked for Lawyer George and Mrs. Martin and their families became friends.

Elizabeth loved traveling and was fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively with friends upon retirement and to visit family in Nebraska, Ohio, Colorado and New York to name a few. She often cruised with her sisters and friends. She also enjoyed being able to travel with her daughter Darnell who worked for the airlines.

Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her husband, Newman Lee Preston Dalton, Sr. and her son, Newman Lee Preston Dalton, Jr., (February 2, 2022). She is survived by her supportive family who are grateful to God for the gift of her life: daughter, Elizabeth Darnell Dalton Carter of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Ethan Keyes Dalton of Aurora, CO; grandchildren: Nicole Dalton Tann (Jesse II) of Centennial, Colorado, Natalie Dalton Lamberton of Denver, Colorado, Newman Lee Preston Dalton, IV (Ivie) of Keller, Texas and Elizabeth Destiny Dalton of Greensboro, North Carolina; great-granddaughter, Jalynn Jicole Deann Tann of Centennial, Colorado; great-grandsons, Jaden Ike Dalton Carpenter of Greensboro, North Carolina and Jesse Dean Tann III of Centennial, Colorado; a sister, Cleo Foote Palmer of Brooklyn, New York; a sister-in-law, Josephine Dalton of Mocksville, North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
