Obituary

Ella Mae English Moore was born in Lexington, NC to Amanda Lee Tate English and Levi English. She passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center. She was the youngest of three girls. She attended Dunbar School on Fourth St. in Lexington before moving to Winston-Salem at an early age after her mother's death. In Winston-Salem she attended 14th Street School and Atkins High School. Ella played trumpet and was a cheerleader.

On June 29, 1957 she married Eddie Moore and they moved to Washington, DC. After several years in DC, they moved back to Lexington. Ella received her high school diploma and majored in the Early Childhood Specialist program at Davidson County Community College. She also worked at DCCC as a daycare teacher and Davidson County Association for Retarded Children (ARC). Ella Mae took the Hemo Dialysis course at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She gave dialysis treatments to clients at their home. She also worked at the Davidson County Sheriff's Department as a deputy and detention officer. She retired from Davidson County Senior Service as a CNA in-home provider.

Mrs. Moore was a longtime member of Union Baptist Church. She organized the church nursery. She was a member of the Missionary Circle and served years as an usher. Ella was very active in her community. She was past secretary and vice-chairman of Davidson County Democratic Party. She was Ward 1 Precinct Chairman for many terms, past secretary of the NAACP, Golden Link Chapter 543 Order of the Eastern Star, member of Banks Miller Post 255 Ladies Auxiliary, Ward 1 Revitalization Committee and secretary of Davidson County Community Action, Smart Start Board member, she served two terms as a member of the City of Lexington Planning and Zoning Board, past secretary of Community Watch South Lexington/King Height area and numerous other community activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her step mother, Vera Small English; two sisters, Rosa Lee English (James) Duncan and Ida Belle English (Eddie) Smith; step brother, Nathaniel Small; her beloved grandmother, Mattie English Holmes Douglas; her guardians (uncle and aunt) Abe and Minnie McCorkle and Johnnie Tate and Addie Royal Jackson and her godfather, Rev. A.T. Evans.

She leaves to cherish loving memories, her beloved children: Vernon (Mary) English, Bonnie Moore (Jimmy) McCray and Michael (Cynthia) Mobley; three grandsons: Erik English, Andrea (Teresa) Cade and Eron Jimell McCray; four granddaughters: Erika English(Bryant) Wise, Shramille E. Brown, Kima Jordan and Tiffany Stafford; 14 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Small and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
