Obituary

Ethel Virginia Cuthrell Transou Walser was born in Winston-Salem, NC on November 9, 1940 to the late Samuel Nathaniel and Edith Cuthrell. She departed this life on March 15, 2024, at Trinity Glen in Winston-Salem, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Sherman "Bobby" Robert Lee Transou; second husband, Gerald Walser; sister Janie Ann "Bitty" Cuthrell; and her beloved grandparents, George and Alice "Mama" Cuthrell.

She was raised in Saint Andrews Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, where she was baptized, participated in Bible School, Sunday School, and served as a Junior Usher. She attended Winston-Salem City Schools and graduated from Atkins High School in 1959. Growing up, she enjoyed roller skating, playing with her cousins, and serving as a letter girl at Atkins High. Post-graduation, she matriculated into and graduated from McLean's Star Stenographic School of Business.

Upon marrying Bobby, she joined Goodwill Baptist Church where she became a faithful member, serving as a historian, missionary, on the Nursing Board, hospitality and decorating committees, Daughters of Sarah, and the GBC Supersonic Seniors. Her jobs included babysitting for family friends, Circle Manufacturing Company, Hennis Freight Lines, Burlington Furniture, and Wells Fargo, formerly Wachovia, from which she retired. She loved spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed decorating for events, teaching and making ceramics, volunteering, arranging flowers, cooking, and catering for numerous organizations.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Sherman Transou (Kelly), Sharlayne "Sherri" Transou Mitchell (James), Keith Transou (Linda), and Ray Walser (Gladys); eleven grandchildren: LaShaunda M. Carter, Barrington R. Transou (Deja), Dr. Devan M. Mitchell, Chelsea R. Mitchell, James "Jay" I. Mitchell, II, Angelique M. Robinson, Stacy L. Loyd (Caryn), Marcus D. Gates, Stephen L. Loyd, Raynicia Dukes and Andre "AJ" Walser; a host of great-grandchildren; two siblings,Yvonne Imes and James "Pouncey" Cuthrell; a devoted niece and nephew, Monica Imes Ross and Charles Imes; in-laws: Pearline Imes, Jimmie Transou, Joseph Transou, Leon Transou, Ervin Transou and Brenda Simmons; seven first cousins: Matthew Cuthrell (Jane), Bertha Mae Jones, David Cuthrell (Barbara), Larry Cuthrell (Ruby), Brenda McDonald, Wanda Brown and Angela Webb (Tony); a loving cousin, Regina Woodberry; special friends: Yvonne Thompson, Irene Coleman, Magdalene Cuthrell, Annestine & Billy Reeves, The Burlington Industries Crew and a host of nieces, nephews, first cousins and other family and friends.

The family would like to thank Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center, Derrick L. Davis Cancer Institute, Trinity Glen, Salem Chest Specialists, Trellis Supportive Care, The Goodwill Baptist Church Family, The GBC Supersonic Seniors, The Golden Girls, The Burlington Industries Crew and Roberts Funeral Service.

A celebration of life will be held 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Goodwill Baptist Church with family moments of sharing at 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday, March 22, 2024 from 11:00 A.M - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
