IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Etta
White
April 9, 1915 – August 16, 2023
A family matriarch Mrs. Etta Michael "Mike" White, 108, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Davidson Health and Rehabilitation in Lexington, North Carolina.
She was born in Davidson County on April 9, 1915 to Frank Cornelius and Mary Estella Lopp Michael. As a child she attended Chestnut Grove United Methodist church. Her parents and teachers had high expectations for her success. While public education for Black students ended at the eighth grade, the Michael children were expected to further their education in high school and college.
Etta was the last member of the Dunbar High School Class of 1932. She furthered her studies at TC, Teachers' College, which is now Winston-Salem State University. Etta was a registered cosmetologist after completing courses at Upperman School of Beauty Culture on Highland Avenue in Winston-Salem. She graduated with honors from Monroe School of Business, in Bronx, New York with an emphasis in shorthand, speed and accuracy.
She worked as a Clerk at the Headquarters of the Navy. This position led to a typist job at the United States Government and eventually she became a Tax Technician in the Audit Division. She retired a United States Civil Service employee after many, many years.
At St. Stephen United Methodist Church she was a member of the chancel, Secretary of the Church Council, 2016 Woman of the Year and the Church Historian. Ms. White is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Estella, her husband, Robert "Bob" White her siblings, Cleo, Shando, Wesley, Ralph, Elard, Odell and Julia.
Etta leaves to cherish her memory, a brother, Lewis Michael, a sister, Lula Pittman, both of Lexington; a host of nieces and nephews and a slew of Michael, Lopp, Brummell family. She was a generous "Aunt Etta" offering support to nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews and many others.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Davidson Health & Rehab for the attentive care they provided Etta during her short stay.
Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done!
