"Toot" Craven
April 23, 1958 – July 15, 2025
Frederick Orlando Craven, affectionately known as "Toot" by many, was born on April 23, 1958 in Davidson County to the late James Elsworth Craven and Beulah Louise Miller Craven. He peacefully transitioned from this life on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Frederick was educated in the Lexington City School System and graduated from Lexington Senior High School with the Class of 1976. He continued his education at Davidson-Davie Community College. A devoted member of Union Baptist Church, he faithfully served as a trustee, usher, choir member and on the kitchen committee.
Toot was known for his warm spirit and big personality. He loved to talk and never met a stranger. Whether he was sharing one of his countless stories, cracking a joke and making someone laugh, his presence could light up any room. He had a gift for bringing joy to others and will be remembered for his humor, kindness and unforgettable conversations.
On August 28, 1982, Frederick was united in marriage to Saundra M. Hargrave. Together, they were blessed with four sons. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Sheldon Devon Craven; his sister, Denise Craven; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vernon and Jean Hargrave.
Frederick leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 42 years, Saundra H. Craven; three sons: Orlando (Tera) Craven, Eric T. Craven and Brandon E. Craven; eleven grandchildren: Cassidy Craven, Jacob Craven, Harmony Craven, Eli Craven, Landon Craven, Levi Craven, Liam Craven, Saniya Craven, Elijah Craven, Ayanna Cephus and Jalen (Cayla) Cephus; two great-grandchildren, Carter Cephus and Kai Cephus.
He is also survived by five brothers: James Craven, Jr., Robert (Katrina) Craven, Carl (Beverly) Craven, Clifton (Annett) Craven, and Eric Craven; three sisters: Vanessa (Otis) Williams, Faye (Cedric) Boger and Regina Martin; four sisters-in-law: Gloria Davis, Allison Vinson, Regina (Steve) Broadway and Karen (Nate) Hargrave; one brother-in-law: Clarence V. Hargrave, Jr.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his special friends: Roy Bush, Robert Perkins, Delmont Friday, Willie Daniels, David Cunningham, Rev. Darrell Thomas, Cindy Miller and Belinda Clark; and his devoted caregivers: Montress Hargrave, Lauren Hargrave, Venice Williams, Regina Broadway, Le'Khia Hargrave, Tera Craven and Quintina Dennis-thank you for the loving care you gave during Toot's illness.
A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends-whom he loved deeply-also mourn his passing.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Service. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow at South Lexington City Cemetery.
