Gwendolyn Martin answered the Master's call and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Novant Health, following an extended period of illness.Lovingly known as Gwen and Nanny, she was born March 9, 1950 in Winston- Salem, NC to Ella Ree Rutledge Johnson and the late Nathaniel Johnson.
Gwen attended New Jerusalem as a child and young woman, but most of her middle and older adult life was spent weathering a debilitating illness, which did not allow her to get out much. However, visits with her would find her acknowledging God and singing her version of gospel songs.Gwen attended the WS/FC schools and worked for Forsyth Hospital before becoming disabled. She loved family and laughter. Her children, grands and great-grands were her sources of enjoyment.Visits from her mom and brothers and sisters always took her back to childhood and she would relish in fond memories.Gwen embraced life when she could and possessed a kind, passionate and infectious personality, leaving lasting impressions on all who she encountered.
Left to cherish memories are her children: Angela Person (Mike) of the home, Debera Waddell, also of the home, John Martin (Vicky) of Winston Salem and Johnisha Martin (Rome) also of the city; her mother, Mrs. Ella Ree Johnson of the city; two sisters, Brenda K.
