Harriett Diggs Harrington was born on March 25, 1923 in Morven, NC, daughter of the late Clara Diggs Diggs and Lester Diggs. She made a peaceful transition to her heavenly home on January 23, 2022, two months shy of her 99th birthday.
Harriett was raised, educated and initially employed as a nurse's aid in Anson County, NC. Seeking other employment opportunities, she and her late husband, Leroy Harrington, moved to Thomasville in 1950. There, they raised a family of seven children, including one adopted niece. Widowed in 1969, Harriett spent many years as a single parent, working full and part-time factory, housekeeping and babysitting jobs that would sustain her family. She succeeded at this endeavor, managing to maintain a stable household for not only her children but also for others entrusted to her care. After retiring from full-time factory work, she continued housekeeping and babysitting jobs well into her early seventies.
Harriett was a member of the Thomasville Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Lovingly referred to as Mother Harrington, she served on the Pastors Aide, the Missionary Circle and the Women's auxiliary. She was also a member of the Rose of Sharon Easter Star and prior to failing health, actively participated in church, Eastern Star and Davidson County Senior Citizen activities. After entering a senior care facility, she was especially delighted and grateful for continuing family and church interaction. Harriett was a women of very strong faith that was only magnified with increasing age; she was often heard repeatedly praying while expressing thankfulness for all God's Goodness. She let family and friends alike know that Life was in God's hands and she was ok with that.
In addition to her parents and husband, Harriett was preceded in death by all of 13 siblings; children: Clarence Harrington, Cora Harrington Green, Clara Rogers Parker and Vivian Harrington Fisher; granddaughter, Lynette Conner; and sons-in-law, James Nelson, Henry Green and Jacob Hopkins, Sr.
Memories will be lovingly cherished by her children: Rosa Nelson, Jean (Imagene) Hopkins and Leroy Harrington, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Paula Harrington; sister-in-law, Sarah Lindsay Diggs; grandchildren: Marcus Payne, Debra Loftin, Sharon Mullins, Tim Green, Tyangye Smith, Charles Goodman, Keyno Baxter, Sherrod Williams, Jacob Hopkins, Jr., Chandra Harrington, Ashley Harrington, Joshua Rogers, Ryan Hopkins and Carlos Fisher, Thomas Barber; adult great grandchildren who truly showered Harriett with special care: Ta'Jun Pratt, Shi'Kean Turner and Chyne Washington; 24 younger great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; and special and much appreciated lifetime friends who epitomize extended "Family."
The funeral service will be Monday at Emanuel Baptist Church at 1:00pm with family visitation at 12:30pm. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park.
