Hortense Alberta Rhodes (née Bailey)
July 14, 1923 - January 11, 2025
Hortense Alberta Rhodes, affectionately known as "Tense" or "Gramsey" to those closest to her, passed away peacefully at the blessed age of 101 on January 11, 2025, in Mocksville, North Carolina.

Born on July 14, 1923, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Hortense was the cherished daughter of Joshua and Delphine Bailey (née Fries). She was raised alongside her beloved sisters, Catherine Bailey and Gwendolyn Bailey.

On May 12, 1945, Hortense married Harold Rhodes, Sr., in New York City, beginning a beautiful union that lasted until Harold's passing at the age of 72. Together, they lovingly raised three children: Harold Rhodes, Jr., Delphine Rhodes, and Dennis Rhodes (deceased).

A graduate of Yorkville High School of Women's Service Trades in June 1941, Hortense excelled academically and later built a successful 40-year career with MetLife Insurance. A devout Christian, she exemplified a life centered on faith, always putting God first and sharing that love through her actions and gentle spirit.

Hortense is survived by her children, Harold Rhodes, Jr., and Delphine Rhodes; her grandchildren, Dorian Adams-Walker and Danielle Rhodes; and her great-granddaughter, Zaina Adams-Walker. She is also preceded in death by her devoted husband, Harold Rhodes, Sr.; her son, Dennis Rhodes; and her sisters, Catherine and Gwendolyn Bailey.

Known for her classically demure and fun-spirited personality, Hortense was a source of love, support, and honesty to all who knew her. She lived a long life that brought joy to her family, leaving a legacy of faith, benevolence, and steadfastness.

A Celebration of Life service will take place on January 25, 2025, at Roberts Funeral Service, located at 3001 Old Greensboro Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. The viewing will begin at 1:30 PM, with the service to follow at 2:00 PM. Procession to the Burial will be held afterward.

In lieu of gifts, contributions to the Bailey Family Cemetery are greatly appreciated. Flowers may be sent directly to the funeral home.
