Our Father has called another one of His faithful soldiers home to be with him and rest. Today, we celebrate the birthday, life, and honor the memory of Jerry Bennett, affectionately known as "JB." His journey began December 3, 1942 and ended November 26, 2021.
Jerry was born in Chesterfield, South Carolina and was educated in the Chesterfield County School District. He moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he lived most of his life. Everyone who knew Jerry knew him for his sharp dressing; he loved his suits and hats. Jerry was full of life, loved to tell jokes and make everyone laugh. Although he was quiet, he was full of energy and never met a stranger.
Jerry loved to travel, which led him to pursue a career as a truck driver. He was employed by Moore and Handley Trucking Company for 25 years. Although he retired from trucking after 25 years, Jerry still worked. Jerry worked for Beasley Funeral Home Services in Winston-Salem, NC for many years. Also, he and his wife had their own cleaning service, known as "J&B Cleaning Services," where they employed family, friends and those who were less fortunate.
Jerry had quite a few hobbies that he enjoyed during his leisure. He admired classic cars and was known for his all white 1968 Chevrolet convertible. With his adoration for cars, he had his own car club known as "The Cars of Yesterday." Another hobby included taking his family to new states and cities for family vacations. The family knew that if they were going on a trip, Jerry would be leading or driving everyone because he knew all the shortcuts and routes. Jerry loved to drink coffee and eat sweets, especially chocolate. He also enjoyed having visitors at his home and didn't mind offering them a fresh cup of coffee. His favorite leisures included reading his Bible, watching his judge shows and spending time with his grandsons and his wife Brenda, whom he adored and was married to for 36 years.
He was a faithful servant and loved the Lord. Jerry's favorite scripture was Psalms 23. He accepted Christ and was a member of Diggs Memorial United Holy Church for thirteen years. Jerry served the Lord at Diggs by singing in the Men's and Mass Choir, driving the church van, being a member of the Men's Ministry and President of the Deacon committee. For the last seven years he has been a faithful member of Messiah Christian Community Church under the tutelage of Pastor Frank Robinson, Jr. He continued to serve the Lord by being a part of the Men's Ministry and serving as a Deacon until his health failed him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, father and two brothers. He leaves to cherish loving memories, his devoted wife, Brenda Bennett; daughters: Betty "Denise" (Clarence) Davis of Concord, NC, Atonette Lisenby of Baltimore, MD, Betty Crawford and Talisha "Wanky"Crawford, both of Winston-Salem, NC; sons: Jerry (Beverly) Lisenby, Jr., Michael A.
