Jimmy Lee
Grooms
Feb 8, 1959 — May 12, 2026
Jimmy Lee Grooms transitioned on May 12, 2026 at 11:34 PM after a long and courageous battle, surrounded by the love of family.
Jimmy's life began on February 8, 1959 in Roberson County, North Carolina, born to the late Willie and Johnnie Mae Morgan Grooms.
Jimmy was a loving husband, family man and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness, humor and generous spirit. He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh, his love for sports, especially as a devoted Tar Heels fan and his enjoyment of playing the lottery. Whether he was spending time with family, talking through his signature earpiece or simply helping others whenever he could, Jimmy brought warmth and laughter wherever he went.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 35 years, Brenda Peay Grooms; sisters: Willie Mae (Thomas) Scales, Rose McIlwaine and Charlene Grooms; brothers, Johnny (Sharon) Grooms and Mark Covington; along with several aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and a close extended in-law family.
Jimmy also helped raise his stepdaughter, Janel Peay and shared a special bond with his step-granddaughter, Alyssa (Deondre) Lee and step-grandsons, Caleb and LJ.
Jimmy accepted Christ at an early age at Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church and later joined Union Baptist Church where he attended until his health no longer allowed. His faith remained important to him throughout his life. We will always remember his favorite song, "I Know My Redeemer Lives."
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Johnnie Mae Morgan Grooms; his brother, William Grooms; along with other beloved family members who welcomed him home with open arms. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing his love, laughter and presence will live on through the countless memories he gave us all.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
