Son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many- a man loved well and was well loved; Joe Dewitt, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 20, 2026, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Surrounded by his loving family at the age of 80.

Born on June 18, 1946, in Conway, South Carolina, Joe was the son of the late Spivey and Maggie Maybell Dewitt. Attending Conway Public Schools, Joe’s childhood was filled with playing jokes, crabbing, fishing, and gardening. He built a career working with his hands as a heavy equipment operator and construction worker at Towns Paving Company and the City of Winston-Salem. In later years janitorial services for Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem. 

Neighbors and friends of the community remember Mr. Joe with the red truck as a storyteller, yardman, helper to all and fixer of anything. Daily morning runs to McDonald’s for a senior coffee, people watching and phone calls to his brothers, sisters, daughter and grandchildren became his favorite pastime in later years. Along with visiting his brothers and sisters down home any chance he could.

Known by his grandchildren for fishing trips, the best house to visit at Halloween and “the Claw”. “Grandaddy with the white hair” ensured each great-grandbaby had a special name, except Alley (she must have been the favorite).

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted daughter, Sharon (Avery DeVaughn); his adored grandchildren, Avonia DeVaughn, Alexis DeVaughn, Avery DeVaughn Jr., and great-grandchildren Keniya (Constantine) Plummer, Alexandria DeVaughn, Arrie Goines, Aubrey DeVaughn, Rose Mayes, Avery DeVaughn III, Cairo Fox and Branden Long Jr. A Host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is survived by siblings JW Dewitt, Johnny Dewitt, Alvin Dewitt, James Allen Dewitt, Annie Ruth Grissett, Magalene Moody, and Marva Dean Vereen. He is preceded in death by siblings Earl Dewitt, Connie Dewitt, Gladys Frazier, Mary Patterson, Alice Frances Brown and Delores Dewitt.

The Funeral Service will be Saturday at Roberts Funeral Service Chapel at 12:30pm with family visitation at Noon.
