Obituary

Reverend Dr. John T. Brown was born in Mocksville, NC on April 24, 1941, to the late Deacon Jesse, Jr and Deaconess Lettie Brown. He was the third child of seven. JT affectionately called, accepted Christ at an early age. He was a father, preacher, teacher, singer but most of all he was a man of GOD.He departed this worldly life and began his Heavenly life on Sunday, June 11, 2017.

J.T. was educated in the Davie County Public School System. He graduated in 1959. After graduation, he relocated to New York City to pursue his career as an R&B Singer with the stage name of "Johnny Dunn", where he was signed and recorded with Hull Records. He traveled all around Tri-State and surrounding area's performing various songs. He recorded, "Like Taking Candy from a Baby", "Under Lock and Key" and remaking tops hits from artist: Sam Cook and Al Green. His soulful and sultry voice touched many souls and hearts thru music.Through the eyes of faith, the seed had already been planted for him to become a gospel preacher.

Rev. Brown met the love of his life Phyllis Saunders in New York City. He asked for a date and she gave him the address to First Union Baptist Church as their first date. In 1976 John joined First Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James E. Wilson Jr. On Oct 21, 1978, he married Phyllis and they become one under God. They have two beautiful daughters. In 1979, Rev Brown accepted the call to become a preacher of the gospel and was ordained in 1980. For several years, he served as Associate Minister of First Union Baptist Church and assistant to Pastor Wilson. He was also active in the Music Ministry with First Union's Male Echoes, the Powell Youth Chorale and the Mass Choir.

Rev. Brown attended the New York Theological Seminary in Manhattan. He graduated from the Eastern Baptist Association School of the Bible, under the direction of Dr. Stanley Kemp. He also attended the Manhattan Bible Institute under the direction of the late Dr. Boyce. Rev. Brown also received his Bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle.

On December 1, 1985, Rev Brown was installed as pastor of the United Solid Rock Baptist Church in Springfield Gardens, NY and he served for twenty-three years. For many years later, he worked closely with the schools and community outreach through the food distribution program, churches, choirs, and the Full Gospel Ministry, just to name a few. Through it all singing the gospel and spreading the word of God, Rev. Brown touched many lives anywhere he went. He was a true man of God and lived by the Word of God.Rev. Brown lived his life by this Philosophy, "to understand and learn, to interpret life as God does learning to see as God sees and learning to hear as God hears and to be able to comprehend in the same mindset as God.

In the late 2000's Reverend and Mrs. Brown retired from United Solid Rock Baptist Church and relocated to Mocksville, NC. This is where he felt most at home reconnecting to his roots of where it all began. It is here where his life began to settle; he realized God had other visions for him to pursue as a testimony of Faith. He released his long awaited Gospel CD entitled "Best Kept Secret" and later, in 2005 in New York a live recording of a "Special Holiday Concert" with Patti LaBelle's musical director John Stanley.

Rev. Brown was passionate about his community and served as a member of the local NAACP chapter.God allowed the devil to test Rev. Brown's Faith in God to see if he would go astray due to repeat ailments and body restrictions. But he stomped on the devil and proved with constant prayer, standing on HIS unchanging hand, God has all Power to Heal his body for continuous PRAISE of the Almighty. He proved his ailments would prove all things will be accomplished through Christ. He continued preaching, singing, dancing, teaching, always pushing for excellence. He was never one to feel intimidated by anyone, if you wanted to learn he was there to teach you, even if you didn't want to he would teach you anyway. That was his way of leaving a Legacy on Life a footprint on earth to remember. He always said "I'm going to continually praise Him every chance I get until the end".

One of his favorite scriptures was Philippians 2:5 "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jettie B. Lindsey.
