February 18, 1957 – October 18, 2025
John C. Small, Sr., affectionately known by many nicknames including "Bucky," "Dear John," and "Mudtap," was born on February 18, 1957 in Davidson County to Ruth L. Holt Small and the late Nathaniel Small. He peacefully transitioned from this life on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Pine Acres Nursing Home.
A proud graduate of Lexington Senior High School, Bucky was known for his infectious laughter, big personality and zest for life. He was a devoted fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the North Carolina Tar Heels, always cheering his teams on with unwavering enthusiasm. He also had a well-known love for Pepsi and KFC—simple pleasures that brought him joy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nathaniel Small; his beloved wife, Betty Shaw-Small; his son, Brandon Jordan; and two brothers, Juan "Churb" Small and Kenneth "Pap" Verdell.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving mother, Ruth H. Small; two children, Laura M. Braxton and John C. Small, Jr.; and eight adored grandchildren: Bryson Braxton, Brooklyn Jordan, Brianna Jordan, Liliana Grace, Madalyn Joyce, Iverson King, Harrison Avery and Alora Delainey. He also leaves behind two bonus children, Kentisha Wilson and Natasha Shaw; four bonus grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He is further survived by his siblings: Marilyn Small, Nathaniel (Melissa) Small, Robert Small, Rachel Small-Ingram and Debra Verdell; his sister-in-law, Patty Small; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at Files Chapel Baptist Church, with family visitation at 12:30 p.m. and homegoing service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Smith Grove View Baptist Church Cemetery.
