John Wesley Davis, affectionately known as "Big Sam," was born on March 2, 1945 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. On Saturday, October 15, 2022 John heard the voice of Jesus, "peace be thine…" and exchanged time for eternity at Trellis Supportive Care.

He was a resident of the city for most of his life where he retired as an employee of Forsyth Hospital. He was a charismatic, funny and loving man, known for his jokes, super-human strength, love of music and football and dedication to his family and friends. Continuing the rich musical traditions of his mother and father's families, John was a passionate and talented singer who took every opportunity to sing, hum or harmonize a tune with relatives, friends and his brothers on the male choir at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Glenn Davis; father, James Boyd Shepard and brothers, Charles Mack and Arthur Davis, Jr.

He is survived by his life companion of 29 years, Ethelene McCauley; sister, Berlene Smith Mack; children: Leah Zeiglar, Dacien Davis, Janae Davis, Latoya Blackwell and daughter, Jean of Maryland; grandchildren: Jarred Zeiglar, Morgan Davis and Isaiah Wesley Blackwell; best friend, James White and a host of relatives and close friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Roberts Funeral Service Chapel with visitation at 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. Public viewing will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022 from 1:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Facial coverings and/or masks are required for the services.

Guests are invited to dine with family and friends immediately after the memorial service at Golden Corral Buffet and Grill, 180 Hanes Mall Circle, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
