John "Butch" Harrison Witherspoon, Jr., born March 30, 1946, in Lexington, North Carolina, passed away on May 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warmth and humor touched everyone who knew him.
Butch is survived by his loving wife, Estelle Witherspoon; his brothers, Carl (Evelyn) Witherspoon and James Witherspoon; two daughters, Roslyn (Corey) Alexander and Rhonda (Dannie) White; his cherished grandchildren, Rianah Alexander, Camari Alexander, Raegan White, and Ryan White; and his bonus grandson, Cameron Hopkins-Harrington. He is also remembered by a host of relatives and friends whose lives he enriched. He was preceded in death by his father, John Harrison Witherspoon, Sr.; mother, Mildred Hargrave Witherspoon; and sister, Harriet Ann Witherspoon.
Those who knew Butch will remember his quick wit and a joke always at the ready. He had a gift for bringing laughter to any situation, often offering levity when it was needed most. A proud grandfather, he never missed a chance to boast about his grandchildren's accomplishments, particularly their academic achievements. Whether chatting with old friends or new acquaintances, his pride in his family always shone through.
In his free time, Butch enjoyed NASCAR, bowling, and tracking the weather. A self-appointed meteorologist, he loved pulling up radar maps and reporting on approaching storms. His curiosity about the world was infectious and reflected in his love for the open road. Some of his fondest memories were made during family road trips in the 1970s, traveling by camper with his children. Those adventures sparked a lifelong love of exploration and created stories his family will carry forever. He took great joy in spending time with his wife of 29 years, Estelle Witherspoon.
Butch's career reflected his strong work ethic and compassion for others. He held positions with BellSouth, the South Carolina Correctional Facility, and later worked as a bail bondsman. In each role, he brought determination, fairness, and deep respect for people from all walks of life. He embraced a new role after retiring, serving as a softball umpire for girls' softball.
Above all, Butch will be remembered for the love he gave so freely, the laughter he shared, and the pride he took in his family. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to the American Heart Association or the American Institute for Cancer Research. Alternatively, honor his memory in your own special way-tell a joke, track a storm, or bowl a frame in his name.
Funeral service will be Friday at 12:00 Noon at Roberts Funeral Service with family visitation at 11:30am. Burial will follow at South Lexington City Cemetery.
