Born December 8, 1957 in Westchester County, New York, he was the son of the late Edna Knotts McDowell and William Garrett. He was educated in the Davie County public school system and later attended Davidson Community College. Jonathan began a career with Mocksville Senior Living, Mocksville, North Carolina.

Jonathan was a member of Mainville AME Zion Church, Mocksville, North Carolina.

He and Irene Lane McDowell were joined in Holy Matrimony for 17 years and they were parents of four great nieces and nephews, twin boys: Mason and Jason Hyde, and Nevaeh and Nadia Hyde all of the home.

Those who survive and will forever cherish his memory are: his wife, Irene Lane McDowell, Mocksville, North Carolina; two sons, Jamaal (Omara) Coote, Atlanta, Georgia and Jaquan Hampton, Greensboro, North Carolina; a daughter, Dr. Meca (Keith) Muhummad, Atlanta Georgia; four grandchildren; brother, Willie (Phenonda) McDowell; sisters, Margaret (Lionel) Hodges and Sheila Garrett; his mother-in-law, Lula Lane, Mocksville, North Carolina; three brother-in-laws: Tal Lane, Brooklyn, New York, Stacy Lane, Mocksville, North Carolina and Alton Lane, Yadkinville, North Carolina; two sister-in-laws: Mary Lane, Mocksville, North Carolina and Cecilia (Curtis) Ijames, Salisbury, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be Sunday at Ezekiel AME Zion Church at 3:00 pm with family visitation at 2:00pm.  Burial will follow at Lexington City Cemetery.   Public viewing will be Saturday from 1:00 - 5:00pm at Roberts Funeral Service.
