Mrs. Lilly M. Fortune, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Lexington, North Carolina on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on June 12, 1940 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Lilly was the daughter of the late William McKenly McNair and Geneva Barnes McNair. She was raised in the Edgecombe and Wilson County areas and developed the strength, determination and resilience that would define her life. As a young girl, she earned the nickname "Meanie," a title she proudly embraced after standing up for herself and her family. Even as a child, Lilly demonstrated the courage and determination that would become hallmarks of her character throughout her life.

Lilly was preceded in death by her parents, William McKenly McNair and Geneva Barnes McNair; her beloved husband of 45 years, Edward "Bud" Fortune; her great-grandson, Christopher Ray Eason; her great-great-grandson, Christopher Ray Eason, Jr.; and her brothers: William McNair, Willie B. McNair, Christopher McNair and Pastor Sylvester McNair.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Maggie (Ricky) Hargrave, Curtis (Maria) Eason, Pastor Kenneth (Barbara) Eason, Jerome (Pam) Eason, Trudy (Will) Thomas, Leslie (Tomiko) Eason; and granddaughter, LoToya Eason; 14 beloved grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; her siblings: Richard McNair, Beatrice Thigpin, Geraldine Darden, Ernestine Hines, Bessie Rodgers and Richard (Debra) Barnes; her lifelong best friend and sister-in-love, Julia Wall; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, neighbors and friends.

A woman of deep faith, Lilly was a longtime member of House of Prayer in Lexington, North Carolina and also attended Files Chapel Baptist Church, where her family maintained deep roots for generations. She faithfully served as Head Cook at House of Prayer and found great joy in serving others. Her faith guided every aspect of her life, and one of the most important lessons she passed down to her family was to always put God first. Her favorite hymn, "I Am a Soldier in the Army of the Lord," reflected the steadfast faith she carried throughout her journey.

Lilly was a hardworking woman who devoted her life to caring for her family. She worked for many years at Dixie Furniture before retiring and later enjoyed working in retail at several local fashion stores. She was especially proud of providing for and raising her six children, instilling in them the values of faith, perseverance and hard work.

Known as the matriarch of her family, Lilly's children were her pride and joy. She treasured family gatherings and created countless memories through family barbecues, holiday celebrations and birthday parties. Whether she was cooking a meal, dancing with loved ones or sharing stories around the table, Lilly made every gathering special.

She loved cooking for her family and was especially known for her homemade cornbread and pineapple coconut cake. In her later years, she enjoyed dining out, traveling with family and friends, taking walks, enjoying music, supporting the arts and spending time with those she loved most. Her laughter was contagious, her sense of humor unmatched and her presence could brighten any room.

Those who knew Lilly remember a woman who was funny, unbelievably strong, gentle, outspoken, stylish, hardworking and fiercely independent. Her determination, which sometimes showed itself as stubbornness, was admired by all who knew and loved her. She never hesitated to help a neighbor, lend a hand to a friend, or offer encouragement to someone in need.

Lilly leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, service and unconditional love. She touched countless lives through her kindness, generosity and unwavering devotion to family. While her family mourns her passing, they rejoice in the memories she created, the lessons she taught and the example she set.

Her greatest joy was her family; her greatest strength was her faith; and her greatest legacy is the love she leaves behind.
