Obituary

Lizzie Martin Mayfield was born August 7, 1921 in Conyers, Georgia. She gave up time for Eternity on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at her residence in Cooleemee, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late James Arthur Martin and Ollie Pruitt Martin. Our mother was dear to so many and her presence will be greatly missed. We are thankful for the years we shared her life.

Lizzie received her formal education in the Rockdale County, Georgia public schools. She retired from WonderNet as a seamstress. Lizzie was a faithful member of Erwin Temple CME Church, Woodleaf, North Carolina. Serving on the Stewardess Board, she was the mother of the Church, and served on the Usher Board and Missionary Board until her health declined. Her favorite hobbies were sewing, cooking, fishing, word puzzles, gardening and playing checkers.

In addition to her parents, Lizzie was preceded in death by her husband after 60 years of marriage, Johnny Mack Mayfield; four sons: Frank Mayfield, Alvin Mayfield, John Lewis Mayfield and Felton Mayfield; two daughters, Doris Gray and Deborah James; five brothers: Felton Martin, Wilton Martin, Charlie Martin, Vernon Martin and Calvin Martin; two sisters, Lessie Allen and Thelma Wood; and two daughters-in-law, Lucille Mayfield and Louise Mayfield; and a son-in-law, John Irvin Gray.

Cherished and fond memories will forever be treasured by her son, Wilton (Kimberly) Mayfield of Mocksville, North Carolina; her daughters: Ruby Howell and Lexeris Cline, both of Cooleemee, North Carolina and Olympia (Milton) Neely of Salisbury, North Carolina; 34 grandchildren; 87 great grandchildren; 47 great great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Savannah Mayfield and Judy Mayfield; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Homecoming Celebration will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Erwin Temple CME Church, 155 Erwin Temple Church Road, Woodleaf, NC with visitation at 1:00 PM prior to service time. Burial will follow at Erwin Temple CME Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held Monday, March 20, 2023 at Roberts Chapel - Mocksville, from 1:00 PM- 5:00 PM.
