With deep love and gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of Lois Hoover Andrews-a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, social worker, choir member and friend-who went home to rest in Lexington on June 7, 2025.
Born on June 29, 1938 in Davidson County to Frank Hoover, Sr. and Laura Brown Hoover, Lois was raised in a home grounded in faith, music and family. She graduated from Dunbar High School, where her strength, kindness and sense of responsibility were well known.
Lois spent a meaningful part of her young adult life in Brooklyn, New York, where she met her beloved husband and built lifelong friendships. These formative years shaped the next chapter of her life and deepened her dedication to service and family.
After returning home to North Carolina, Lois committed her professional life to serving others as a social worker at Davidson County Social Services. Her career was marked by empathy, integrity and tireless advocacy for children, families and vulnerable adults. She believed deeply in self-determination and the power of support systems to restore dignity and hope.
A lifelong member of Yadkin Star Baptist Church, Lois served her congregation with humility and love. Alongside her sisters, she was a cherished member of the Hoover Sisters Gospel Choir, uplifting congregations across the state with harmonies rooted in faith. Her warm presence brought light to church gatherings, family celebrations and neighborhood events alike.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Earl Andrews; her son, Ingemar LeGrand (from a previous marriage); and nine siblings: Geneva Hoover Peoples, Nona Hoover, Essie Hoover Mack, Ruth Hoover Staplefoote, Gladys Hoover Holmes, Katy Lee Hoover Evans, Frank Hoover, Jr., John Gilmer Hoover, and Baxter Louis Hoover.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in her daughter, Leslie Andrews McCandies; sons, Elliot Scott Andrews and Earl Dennis Andrews; sister, Pearline Hoover Moss; grandchildren: Kelly LeGrand, Andre LeGrand, Nicole McCandies and James (Megan) McCandies; great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless dear friends whose lives she touched with compassion, generosity and quiet strength.
Lois was famously known for her chocolate-on-chocolate sheet cake, a sweet highlight of Sunday gatherings-shared not just for taste, but to bring joy. She also held a lifelong passion for quilting, crafting beautiful pieces that she gifted to friends and family. Each quilt was stitched with care and affection, "like giving away love wrapped in fabric," as one admirer once said.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the care teams at Lexington Medical Center, Davidson Health & Rehab Center and the Hospice of Davidson County. Your compassion and professionalism brought comfort and dignity to Lois' final days.
A Homegoing Service for Lois Hoover Andrews will be held on Thursday at 2:00 PM at Yadkin Star Baptist Church, with family visitation beginning at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
