On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, Marie Antoinette Jakes Pressley departed this life. She was born in Selma, North Carolina on February 27, 1935 to the late Charles & Marie Jakes.
When Marie was young, her family moved to Brooklyn New York and was associated with the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Marie attended Eastern District where she graduated in 1952 at the age of 17.
She was married to Jesse Pressley for more than 20 years. Later she married William Gilburt (whose last name she never carried).
She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jesse Pressley; and siblings: Vivian Sistrunk, Charles Jakes, Eddie Jakes, Gregory Sistrunk, Keith Sistrunk and Stephanie Gaffney.
She leaves behind to mourn her death, celebrate her life and cherish her memory, nieces and nephews: Ifeya Johnson, Aljalah Riddick, Arkim Riddick, Mellasia Riddick, Secmecca Nevels, Karema Nevels, Bashecum Daniels, Shamele Collins, Shakim Nevels, Self Daniels, Quaneequa Daniels, Hannah Davis, Lamel Sistrunk, Rakim Washington, Evonna Sistrunk, Shenequa Turner, Jaison Gaffney, Quasia Harris, Ideshaun Harris, and Melik Gaffney; Lonnie, Kathy, Jan, Karen, Sharon and her line dance buddies Jeanette and others; card buddies, Joan, Glenda, Carlette & Kim and any others not intentionally forgotten.
