A light from our household is gone,
A voice we love is still. A place is vacant
In our home, which never can be filled.
Mrs. Mary Louise Newbern Cooper was born January 21, 1957 to the late William and Marion Newbern in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Mary relocated to San Diego, California at a young age. She attended the public schools of San Diego and was a 1976 graduate of Morse High School. She was employed at the University of San Diego California hospital for 20 years. She was introduced to William Cooper by her brother in 1990. They were married in August 1994; she loved to call him "Chilly". Mary was employed at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for 17 years and was a retiree. Mary was a faithful member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and a devoted member of the Mass Choir.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; she was one of 13 children born to this union. Additionally, four brothers and three sisters preceded her.
She leaves not to mourn but rather to cherish her memories, her husband of 29 years, William "Chilly" Cooper of the home; two sons, Roosevelt (Shianne) Middlebrook and Cedric Middlebrook of the city; two daughters, Ms. Shaquita Moore and Ms. Andrea Cooper of the city; three sisters: Ms. Patricia Jones, Mrs. Linda Proctor and Ms. Sherean Newbern all of San Diego, CA; four brothers: Richard, William, Michael and Robert Nebern of San Diego, CA; her father-in-law, Deacon Elgent Cooper of the city; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Ledell Cooper and Ms. Lovell Sims of the city; brother-in-law, Mr. Reginald Cooper of the city; three grandsons: Kenan and Isiah Middlebrook and Noah Whitner all of the city; three granddaughters: Ms. Zahia and Arieal Middlebrook, Jasia Moore all of the city; special niece, Ms. LaTanya Jennings of Raleigh, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and admirers.
Homegoing Celebration will be at 12:00 P.M. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church with family visitation at 11:30 A.M. prior to the service. Entombment will follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Public viewing for Mrs. Mary Cooper will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 1:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
