Mrs. Mary Hazel Smith Griffin was born in Davidson County, North Carolina to the late Joseph Edward Smith, Sr. and Martha Rose Henderson Smith on August 21, 1930. She departed her earthly life on Monday, September 26, 2022 at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Hazel, as she was affectionately known, received her education from the Davidson County Schools System. She was employed at Golden Age Nursing Home, and later worked with the Snider and Bowers families.

Hazel's spiritual journey started at an early age as a member of Union Chapel AME Zion Church, Lexington, North Carolina. At church, she served as the Mother of the Church, Class Leader, a member of the Stewardess Board, Missionary Board, Zionettes, kitchen committee and as church custodian.

Hazel was a fun-loving, happy person. She loved her family and friends. She was always willing to help wherever she could; and she loved family gatherings. Mary was known for her cooking style, but her greens were well known throughout the county. She loved flowers and playing in her garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul Grady Griffin; two sisters, Edna Griffin and Robena Jones; and three brothers: Joseph Smith, William Smith and Leroy Smith.

Memories of Mary will be cherished by her daughters, Barbara Carson and Paula Griffin, both of Lexington, North Carolina; godchildren: Darin Griffin, Anthony Griffin, Latoyer Hargrave, Shawna Marsha; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
