Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Swann Ways, born on May 21, 1946 in Richmond, Virginia to Nanny Brown and James Swann, passed away on December 17, 2024, reuniting with her beloved late husband, Charlie Ways.

Raised in Harlem, Mary embarked on a lifelong career of care and service. She began her professional journey in the late 1960's at Francis Delafield Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Encouraged by her passion for helping others, Mary pursued further education and excelled in nursing school, which led her to a distinguished career at Bellevue Hospital.

In 1974, Mary accepted a challenging role in Bellevue Hospital's prison ward, where she worked with unwavering dedication and compassion until her retirement in 1997. Even after retiring, her commitment to patient care remained steadfast. In 1999, she joined Heritage Health Care, continuing to serve others with the same grace and passion until her final retirement. Her career is a testament to her devotion to nursing and her enduring compassion for those in need.

Mary is survived by her loving family: her son, Gregory Swann and his wife, Latoya Swann; her daughter, Angela Miller; and her "inherited" son, Brian Champion. She also leaves behind her cherished siblings: Yvonne Grier, Josephine Townsley and Edward Lee Mickleberry; her seven adored grandchildren: Johnelia Graves, Gregory Swann, Myasia Swann, Isaiah Swann, Chanel Swann, Tashonda Swann and Narva Ways; her two great-grandchildren, Cashmere Swann and Leilani Denise Sanchez; her godchildren, Preston Fulwood, Lavern Wilson, Johnny Wilson, Anthony Nickelson and Chakima Scott; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Mary's love, wisdom and humor will be deeply missed by her family, especially her son and grandchildren, and by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
