Patsy Cornelia Mabry Corley was born October 24, 1930 to Reba I. Mabry and Clifford O. Koontz in Lexington, North Carolina. Patsy peacefully returned home on January 21, 2016 with her family by her side at the age of 85.
Graveside service will be Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Lexington City Cemetery at 11:00 am.
Patsy received her formal education at Dunbar High School in Lexington, North Carolina. Throughout high school, Patsy participated in several school clubs and activities, including the Skull & Bone Club and The Glee Club. She was a Cheerleader, and served as the Secretary of the Senior Class and of the French Club. Patsy was also a member of the yearbook committee and was crowned "Ms. Dunbar" in 1949. Patsy was quite popular. Upon graduating from Dunbar High School, Patsy gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Marva. Shortly after high school, Patsy attended North Carolina Central College for one year before heading off to the Big Apple. Upon arrival, Patsy gained employment providing domestic service for various families. Studley Paper Company then employed Patsy for several years until she landed a career position in Food Services with the New York City Department of Education, where she genuinely enjoyed working until retiring in 2010. Patsy became a faithful member of Amity Baptist Church in 1961, and served as the Faithful Few President for several years. Patsy had an unwavering faith in God to the day she took her last breath. Always fondly saying "God will never leave me or forsake me". In 1968, Patsy married James Woodrow Corley, Sr. and, of this union, a son James Woodrow Corley, Jr., was born. Patsy was a strong, feisty, independent, loving, outgoing, fashionable woman. Patsy was a nurturer by heart, selflessly giving her time to care for others. Among many who were blessed by her caring nature were Nana Plunkett and Deacon Alexander.
Patsy is survived by her two children: daughter Marva Boyer (Chuck) and son James Corley, Jr.; four grandchildren: Evan, Kirk (Ganesa), Miya (Fareed), and Kahliah; and seven great grandchildren: Khylil, Aquil, Zamyah, Evan Jr., Fareed, Khya, and Ma'isa. Patsy is also survived by a host of North Carolina family members, many New York friends, and a loving church Family (Amity Baptist Church), along with two special ladies, Karen Southwood and Vergie Lawrence.
