Richard Carlton Russell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, exchanged labor for reward on November 21, 2024. Born on August 26,1956, in Washington, D.C., Richard's journey through life was marked by service, commitment, and an unwavering love for his family. He went to high school and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. After proudly serving in the Air Force Richard moved his family to North Carolina where he lived the rest of his life. He worked in the furniture industry until his retirement in 2015. Richard was known for his strong work ethic, but above all he cherished the moments spent with his family.
Richard shared a beautiful marriage of 50 years with his beloved wife, Marilyn Russell. They were married at the age of 18. Together they created a nurturing and loving home filled with joy, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness. Their partnership was a testament to the strength of love and commitment. They served as a role model for the power of love and the sanctity of marriage to their children and all who knew them. Richard was the proud father of four children: Cecilia Harris (Lamont), Janet Beauford (Wayne), Julie Russell, and Richard Russell II(Jessica). In each of them he instilled a strong sense of values and an appreciation for family that will endure through generations. His love extended even further to his grandchildren: Jeremy Jr., Regina (Rayshaun), Jatica, Shawne, Marcus, Anaya, Richard Russell III, Zion, Javon, Neveah, and Heaven. They brought him immense joy and a sense of fulfillment. Richard also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Zahmir, Cameron, Star, Dredyn, Nori, Shawne(3rd), Jeremy III, Bella, Justice, Zayden, and Ava whose innocence and laughter brightened his days. He was preceded in death by his father Clifford Russell and leaves his mother, Delores Russell, his wife, Marilyn Russell, his children, and grandchildren.
Richard will be remembered for his cool spirit, his sense of humor, his love for the Dallas Cowboys, his rock music, and the stories he shared with those around him. He had a natural ability to make people laugh wherever he went and lived his life with an open door. He and his wife were always willing to lend a helping hand to those around them and fostered many children, (Robert, Bobby, Junior, Norman, Montrice) and a host of others. He was lovingly known by them as "Pops".
Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment that will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we gather to honor Richard's life, we celebrate the moments of laughter, the lessons learned, and the love shared that will forever remain in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Richard's name, honoring the spirit of generosity and love he embodied throughout his life.
Richard Carlton Russell will be profoundly missed but warmly remembered. May he rest in peace.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
