Obituary

Roy Lee Holt, affectionately known as "Choker," was a true legend in his community—loved by many and remembered for the impact he made on everyone he met. Known for his sharp mind, he never forgot a birthday, even at 84 years old. His humor and honesty were unmatched; with no filter and a joyful boldness, he often said exactly what he was thinking, leaving everyone laughing in the best way.

In his younger years, he was known on the football field and around Dunbar High School as "Tippy," a standout athlete whose determination and talent eventually earned him a place in the Lexington Senior High School Hall of Fame.  He attended Fayetteville State University where he was an outstanding athlete.

Roy was born in Davidson County on July 30, 1941 to Laura Lindsay Holt and John Clifford Holt. He was a faithful member of Smith Grove View Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, and he retired from PPG Industries. He also served his community as a member of the Lexington City School Board.

A HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan, Choker could always be found in the little outhouse he built—affectionately called the "Lil House"—watching westerns, enjoying golf or cheering on his Cowboys. His bold personality, quick wit and genuine spirit made him truly unforgettable. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and stories that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

On Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center, Choker was reunited with his parents and his six siblings: Mary Ann Holt, Charles Holt, Virginia H. Woodberry, Josephine H. Gaddy, Sylvester Holt and Garland Holt.

He leaves to cherish his forever memory his loving and devoted wife, Patricia R. Holt; his five children: Kim (Tyress) Bratton, Rory (Kathy) Holt, Pamela (Jerome) Eason, DeLisa (Yahan) Anderson and Marcus Holt; 13 grandchildren: Tim, Rashad, Kierra, Lindsay, Coco, Marcus, Whitney, Maury, Maurisa, Nautica, Alex, YaLeia and A'Sani  and 8 great-grandchildren; a niece whom he helped raise, Donetta M. Roberts; three sisters: Ruth Small, Sylvia (Timothy) Hargrave and Elnora Nance; two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Roberts and Allie Mae Holt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Homegoing Service for Roy Holt will be held on Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church.  Family visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.  Burial will follow at Smith Grove View Baptist Church.
