Obituary

Roy Stanley Turman, affectionately known as “Stan,” was born on May 5, 1950, in Lincolnton, Georgia, to the late Gipson and Sarah Turman.

Stan, the second oldest of four brothers Frank, Norris, and Donnie who preceded him in death, was raised in Lincoln Park in Lexington, North Carolina. He attended Dunbar High School, where he was active in both football and baseball, before transferring to Lexington High School during integration where he graduated in 1968.

He continued his education at Winston-Salem State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Stan met the love of his life, Loretta McLendon, in 1973. The two were married four years later, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, faith, and devotion.

Stan began his professional career in finance at General Motors and later moved to Ford, where he excelled as a sales manager. His outstanding performance earned him selection into the prestigious Dealer Development Program, where he graduated at the top of his class.

In 1991, Stan relocated to Warner Robins, Georgia, where he made history as the first Black owner of a Toyota dealership within Southeast Toyota. After five successful years, he sold the business. Following this achievement, Stan moved to Marietta, Georgia to pursue a new entrepreneurial opportunity. He went on to open the first Daewoo dealerships in the United States and served as General Manager of the Daewoo of Decatur, Georgia. Stan remained in this leadership role until his retirement from the automotive industry in 2003.

Even in retirement, Stan remained driven and resilient. Despite experiencing vision loss, he joined the Business Enterprise Program, where he successfully operated a retail space at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and later managed a larger location at the FAA. Following the closure of the FAA location due to budget cuts, Stan officially retired.

Stan and Loretta shared over 49 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful family together. He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his sons Garrett , Christian”Chris”, Adrian and his son-in-law, Jacquis Nelson; and his cherished grandchildren, Chase, Sean, Nyla, and Chandler .

Stan deeply valued time with his family. He enjoyed meaningful conversations, laughter, and creating lasting memories. In his quieter moments, he could often be found watching CNN, CNBC, the History Channel, or sports unless he and Loretta were out enjoying a drive around the city together.

A man of many talents, Stan was both a skilled cook and a gifted artist. When his children were younger, he would create the drawings for their school projects leaving teachers impressed by the “advanced” artwork, unaware that Stan was the true artist behind it.

Above all, Stan was a devoted family man. He loved deeply, protected fiercely, and always spoke his truth with grace.

Stan peacefully transitioned on May 17, 2026, surrounded by the love and worship of his wife, children, grandchildren, brother (Norris), sister-in-law (Wanda) after a long and courageous battle facing it with unwavering strength and dignity.

He leaves behind a legacy that cannot be replaced by a deep well of love, wisdom, and guidance that will continue to live on through his family for generations to come.

He will be forever missed.
