Shelia D
Hargrave
Feb 7, 1955 — May 10, 2026
Shelia Diane Hargrave peacefully entered eternal rest on May 10, 2026 at Trellis Supportive Care Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Born on February 7, 1955 to Mildred Cross and the late Willie Gene Cross, Shelia lived a life marked by faith, love, laughter and a deep devotion to her family and friends.
She will be remembered for the love and joy she shared with everyone around her. She had a caring heart, a wonderful sense of humor and a personality that could brighten any room. Known for speaking her mind with honesty and love, Shelia always kept it real while still bringing laughter wherever she went. She found happiness in her family, her faith and helping others, and she leaves behind cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Shelia was a proud 1973 graduate of Lexington Senior High School. She began her career as a telephone operator with the Lexington Telephone Company and later became a dedicated employee of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center, where she served faithfully until her health declined, leaving a lasting impression on her coworkers and those she served.
Shelia was also a devoted and faithful member of New Jersey AME Zion Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Kitchen Committee. Her service reflected her deep faith, generous spirit and life-long commitment to helping others. She also enjoyed baking cakes, often sharing them with family, friends and her church as a simple expression of her love.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Latasha Barknight; beloved granddaughter, Sierra Toney of Charlotte; her mother, Mildred Cross; siblings: Kathy Hargrave, Willie Hargrave and his wife Jo Hargrave, and Jimmie Cross; her loving life partner, Roland Nixon and his children, Roland Boger and Dr. LaShondrea Nixon and grandchildren whom she loved as her own. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles: Sim Hargrave, Timothy (Sylvia) Hargrave, Vivian Banks, Thurman Hargrave, Sharon Hargrave, James (Shirley) Hargrave of Crowley, Texas, Frank (Yvonne) Cross and Bruce (Robbie) Cross; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her love, laughter and the memories they shared with her.
The Home-going Service will be Sunday at New Jersey AME Zion Church with family visitation at 3:00pm and the Home-going will be at 3:30pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be Saturday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at Roberts Funeral Service.
