Thomas Jefferson Gwyn, 97, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, peacefully departed this life on Monday, November 24, 2025 at Oak Hills Health and Rehabilitation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Thomas, affectionately known as "Babe" was born on August 1, 1928 in Forsyth County, North Carolina to the late Burt Carruthers and Margaret Johnson. He was educated in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Public School System and grew up with a strong foundation of faith and family.
A man of great skill and diligence, Babe worked for many years at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in the Facility Maintenance Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Margaret Johnson Carruthers; two sons, Tremus Catoe and Albert Gwyn; two daughters, Brenda Jones and Valeria Grafton; three sisters: Barbara White, Mattie Hatten, Queen Kelly; and two brothers, George Gwyn and James Johnson.
Babe is survived by his children: Sylvia Howard, Princetta Scurlock (Leon), Johnnie Mae Thompson, Karen Gwyn Horne, Sharon Evans and Brian Foy; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters: Alberta Foy, Gardine Jackie Gwyn, Marie (John Henry) Thomas of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Roberts Funeral Service (Winston-Salem). Interment will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery.
